Sarabeth's Restaurant New York

Sarabeth's Restaurant New York

Located on the south end of Central Park, Sarabeth’s is a New York institution for brunch. Sarabeth’s started in 1981 when Sarabeth and Bill Levine opened a tiny bakery-kitchen to make and sell their preserves and baked goods. The restaurant spread to over 5 locations in New York and in 2005 opened the largest restaurant in its Central Park South location. Sarabeth’s preserves and baked goods have been acclaimed by food critics for decades. The restaurant’s award-winning “Legendary Spreadable Fruit” had its beginning in Sarabeth’s and Bill’s Manhattan apartment with a few jars being sold to local businesses today are sold in the finest department stores, gourmet shops and specialty stores throughout the North America and Asia.

The restaurant’s décor offers an upscale dining experience with luxurious chairs and tables and views of Central Park. As the largest of the Sarabeth’s restaurants, the Central Park South location offers a main dining room, a boxwood garden room, a skylight room, and outdoor seating in the summertime.

Sarabeth’s is on the more expensive end of brunch spots, but justly so. At $6.75 a glass, the Four Flowers Juice is an explosively delicious concoction of orange, pineapple, banana and pomegranate, as well as a drain on the wallet. In addition, the sweet breakfast items (at $16 a plate) offer lemon and ricotta pancakes, pumpkin waffles and almond-crusted French toast. These baked goods are served with special Sarabeth’s-made maple syrups, apple butters, pumpkin seeds mixed with honey and various fruit jams. Sarabeth’s is also known for their egg dishes. Try the classic eggs benedict with freshly made English muffins, smoked salmon eggs benedict or the red omelet (filled with a chunky sauce of tomatoes and red peppers with cheddar cheese, topped with a dollop of sour cream with chives).

Again, as one of the most popular brunch destinations in New York, you should try to book reservations as far in advance as possible. If you are a walk in, be prepared for waits of an hour during peak hours. During your wait, however, Central Park and Fifth Avenue shopping are conveniently located close by to entertain you. Or you could try going later in the day, as Sarabeth’s serves breakfast all day long.

Service can be spotty, ranging from making you feel right at home to practically ignoring you, but the food is well worth it. As with the other bakery-brunch restaurants, definitely purchase some of the baked goods and preservatives to take with you
